Governor Rell Announces Meeting to Try to Save Winchester Jobs

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that officials from the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), the Connecticut Development Authority (CDA) and the city of New Haven met in Hartford to continue the efforts to save the jobs that are being lost as a result of the closing of the Winchester rifle plant in New Haven.

“We have been working hard to find buyers for the factory,” Governor Rell said.  “Let me make this clear: It is not the building we care about, it is the workers inside of that building who we care about.  We will continue to fight hard to keep these jobs right here in Connecticut.

“The workers at Winchester and their families have my pledge that the state of Connecticut will do everything in its power to help them in this difficult time.  We will continue to partner with the city to explore all options available to us.  Today’s meeting sends a clear signal that we have not—and will not—give up in our efforts to preserve these jobs.”

The state of Connecticut, through DECD, has a longstanding relationship with the U.S. Repeating Arms Company.  In addition to investing millions in their facility in New Haven, the department has been in constant contact with company leadership and local officials concerning potential job cuts dating back to 2002.  As part of this effort, the department made several offers of assistance to the company to improve the financial standing of the operation.  Most recently DECD staff has focused its efforts on preserving job opportunities.

DECD Commissioner James Abromaitis, a participant in today’s meeting, said, “One of the goals of today’s meeting is for all parties to agree to continue to work together to ensure that this facility maintains it marketability to prospective buyers or new employers.”
